Expected Changes after Elon Musk’s Twitter Deal
Owner of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk is now the new owner of Twitter as well. He has bought the 100% shares of Twitter at the cost of $44bn. Musk has always been a self described advocate of free speech. He has promised to add new features like human authentication. However, still we are not sure exactly how Twitter will change but here are a few things which we can expect to be changed after Elon Musk takes over Twitter, one of the well known social media channels.
Free Speech and Content Moderation
Musk has frequently given his opinion about too much intervention of Twitter content moderators. According to him Free speech is very crucial for a functioning democracy and Twitter is one of the digital town squares where some important matters about the future of humanity are discussed.
He wants to relax content restrictions on Twitter and started a social platform without content moderation. According to the critics the major reason behind his decision of buying the Twitter platform is to go around the content moderation policies of Twitter.
The Introduction of the Edit Button
Earlier it has been said by Twitter that they are working to add an edit button that would allow the users to edit their tweet even after posting. Twitter,s vice president Mr. Jay Sullivan stated that it is one of the most requested features. By using the edit button Twitter users would be able to fix errors or typos in their tweets without losing retweets, replies or likes which they have gained.
However, one of the most important questions here is how to implement this feature while obstructing it,s abuse like changing tweets once others have endorsed or retweeted. Tracking changes via edit logs would be a good solution to this issue as people will be able to view the history of changes on a post the same as Slack and Facebook.
Twitter’s Algorithm Should Be Open-Source
Twitter’s algorithm which determines the tweets priority to get served to the users will be open sources which it will be available for the public to see and improve upon. According to Must’s statement it will be from the manipulation behind the scene like fueling any foriegn propaganda. However, according to some analyses there is an objection in Musk’s proposal that it simplifies the process of making data public that can raise some serious privacy concerns.
The professor of media studies Mr. Ramesh Srinivasan at the University of California stated that Twitter’s algorithms promote engagement via steering emotional reactions that makes the hateful content viral.
Tackling Cryptocurrency Scams
Elimination of the scam bots and bots armies on Twitter is one of the top priorities of Elon Musk. The best and proposed solution for this issue is authentication of all real humans or having accounts apparently linked to other personal identifiers such as an email address , a photo or a phone number.
Billy Markeus the co-founder of Dogecoin has complained to the team of Twitter support about the Twitter being stuffed with the scams of scrypto giveaways. In such scams the fake twitter handles mock famous personalities of the crypto market.
